Executive Director

The Eden Mills Writers’ Festival celebrates the power of words – whether written, spoken or signed – to ignite our imaginations and reveal worlds and ideas beyond our own experience. By presenting literary works that reflect a wide range of perspectives and experiences, we hope to engender an informed and articulate community that connects with open hearts and open minds. Now in its 36th year, the EMWF is hiring for the newly created role of Executive Director (ED), in a new governance structure that ensures the growth, operational excellence, and sustainability of our community-built festival.

Reporting to an active Board of Directors, the ED will provide strategic, operational, financial, and administrative leadership and drive execution of the annual September festival. The ED represents the EMWF externally, strengthens its public profile, and steers the organization’s growth and donor diversification strategies. The ED leads a small team of contract and seasonal staff; manages the organization’s financial capital, including donor and grant relations; leads festival operations; and designs and supports development efforts that advance the non-profit organization’s mandate.

The ideal candidate is an organized go-getter who is a respected and trusted manager; you are a strategy-led tactician with an entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for arts management. You will help ensure our continued success and impact, and be the face of the organization in the local community (near Guelph) and beyond. Your integrity, charm and leadership will help us build and sustain donor relationships through the year. You have a strong head for strategy and have lots of idea, and when it comes to tactics and execution, you like to roll up your sleeves and manage the details, too. You are a strong and tactful communicator with great people skills, and you have a proven successful track record of building strategic partnerships with donors, foundations, corporations, the press, government, and other non-profit organizations. You are a strong community-minded manager who builds and aligns teams, and is passionate about inclusion and diversity, sustainability, and free speech. You have experience in a comparable organization within the arts or general non-profit events space.

This role is a hybrid remote/in person 50% – 75% part time permanent staff position. The candidate will ideally reside in or around the Guelph area, where EMWF is headquartered. This position can be supported via a virtual model with a virtual team; however, festival headquarters are open and available for any in-person meetings at the preference of staff and the Board.
