Workshop: The Joy of Revision

With Kate Heartfield

Revising a long work can be a daunting prospect–but it can also be a joy.

In this workshop, author Kate Heartfield will guide you through her process, covering topics such as making a plan, working with feedback, and keeping your spirits up. She’ll give her answers to the two most common questions: Where do I start? And how will I know when I’m done? The workshop will also include two short writing exercises aimed at helping writers see the big picture, and some time for discussion and Q&A.

Participants will leave with:

  • A process tailored to their own writing style that they can use for future projects
  • A toolkit for revision
  • Increased confidence to revise a project of any length

$50 (save 10% if you buy more than one)

Suitable for:

Writers of any level of experience.

What to prepare:

Writers who have a work-in-progress can use it as the focus of the exercises, but there will be alternative exercises for those who are not working on a novel. Participants do not need to prepare in advance, but should have a pen and paper to hand if they prefer to write that way.

Kate Heartfield is the author of several fantasy novels, including The Tapestry of Time (2024), about four clairvoyant sisters in WWII; The Valkyrie (2023), a retelling of old Norse and Germanic legends; and the Sunday Times bestseller The Embroidered Book (2022), about Marie Antoinette and her sister Maria Carolina, both of which won the Aurora award. She has also written interactive fiction through Choice of Games, and Assassin’s Creed tie-in novels. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the World Fantasy, Nebula, Locus, Aurora, Sunburst, Scribe and Crawford awards, as well as the Ottawa Book Award, and her journalism for a National Newspaper Award. Kate grew up in Manitoba and now lives in Ottawa.

Love, heroism and the supernatural collide in the midst of war.

There’s a tradition in the Sharp family that some possess the Second Sight. But is it superstition, or true psychic power?

Kit Sharp is in Paris, where she is involved in a love affair with the stunning Evelyn Larsen, and working as an archivist, having inherited her historian father’s fascination with the Bayeux Tapestry. He believes that parts of the tapestry were made before 1066,and that it was a tool for prediction, not a simple record of events.

The Nazis are also obsessed with the tapestry: convinced that not only did it predict the Norman Conquest of England, but that it will aid them in their invasion of Britain.

Ivy Sharp has joined the Special Operations Executive–the SOE–a secret unit set up to carry out espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance. Having demonstrated that she has extraordinary powers of perception, she is dropped into Northern France on a special mission.

With the war on a knife edge, the Sharp Sisters face certain death. Can their courage and extrasensory gifts prevent the enemy from using the tapestry to bring about a devastating victory against the Allied Forces?
