Heather M. O’Connor

Heather M. O’Connor is an award-winning children’s author and freelance writer. Her first picture book Fast Friends won the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award and was a finalist for the Blue Spruce Award, the IODE Jean Throop Award, and the Shining Willow Award.

Heather has been obsessed with horses all her life. As a child, she wanted to keep a pony in her big-city backyard. As a teen, she spent all her money on trail rides and cowboy boots. So when Heather heard about the Ojibwe Horses at Quetico Provincial Park, she flew up to northwestern Ontario to meet them.

When Heather isn’t working on fiction, she writes kid-friendly news articles about dinosaurs, superheroes, volcanoes and climate change for Currents4Kids and News4Youth. She loves doing school and library visits, snuggling up with a good book, and playing soccer. Heather lives in Peterborough, Ontario with her family and her dog Pippin.

“Elders say they were always here. The horses were small, but strong.”
“Like me?”
“Like you.”

As they await the birth of a new foal, a man teaches his grandchild about the Ojibwe Horses that used to roam the forests of northwestern Ontario. The horses once ran wild and free, but when Grandfather was a boy, they almost disappeared. Now he is the caretaker of his own small herd, keeping the breed alive for future generations and teaching his grandchild about the loving bond between human and animals.
