Alister Thomas

After a 35-year career in the Calgary magazine business (writing and editing), Alister Thomas returned to Ontario and now lives on Toronto Island. An avid canoeist, Alister has paddled in the Far North and the Florida Everglades, on mountain and desert rivers, through old-growth forests and on urban waterways.

Via an MFA in Creative Nonfiction at King’s College/Dalhousie University, Alister is writing a book that investigates important water issues — atmospheric rivers, a warming Arctic, Alberta’s oilsands and tailings ponds — from a canoeist’s point of view. ReadingWater also chronicles the health of our forests and wildlife as well as providing strokes toward Indigenous reconciliation.
